Mark Swann recalls, "It was my first night at training after Charlie dragged me out of retirement to sign for Chasetown FC, where I had my first memory of this true gentleman".
"I had actually signed with a little injury and Charlie directed me into the treatment room to be introduced to the medical team. I knew Mickey Andrews and Phys (Gary McHale) from my previous club but there was this other man, who turned with a stern, quite intimidating look on his face".
"Charlie did his introductions and explained that I had a slight issue with my hip and asked if it could be looked at. As I knew my previous two physios (Mick and Gary) I walked over to Ted and offered my handshake". Mark goes on to say, "With a firm grip he looked me in the eye and welcomed me with his first words, 'We haven’t signed another bloody Dud have we?', followed by his infectious laugh (I can hear it now)".
"This was Ted to a tee! Straight talking, honest, passionate, caring and a man that certainly didn’t suffer fools".
"I soon got to know Ted and very quickly gained the up most respect for him. Not only in his role at the football club as a physio but most importantly as a person".
"It was really good sitting down with the management team after training last night with Slates, Birty and Jay. Because of the time we have all been connected to the club, especially Slates and Birty, we all have many great memories of Ted".
"Ted was still a big part of our journey. Since we joined the football club 4 years ago, and right up until recent months when he was attending home games, he always took the time to make his way round to the dressing room entrance to give his support and rallying cries to the current squad and pass on his inspirational words to myself about getting them up for the game".
"He always wanted to make sure we never let up on the opposition, and the fire in his belly was still as strong as ever to see our football club doing well".
"I’m personally gutted that we didn’t have chance to see him at the ground for one last send off, but I will guarantee him that we will be giving every ounce of energy and try to carry his spirit and passion to fight as hard as possible in the last 9 games of the season!",
"There aren’t many in the game like Ted anymore. A unique, loyal man who will be sadly missed by all at Chasetown FC".
Thanks for letting me in mate!
Rest In Peace.
