Over 60 years ago, Michael Joiner did just that by founding Chasetown FC out of pure love for the game and a passion for his community. Since then, he’s been at the heart of everything the club has become.
This week, Mike’s remarkable contribution to football was recognised at the Non-League Paper’s National Game Awards at AFC Wimbledon, where he was honoured with the Unsung Hero Award. And while Mike is far too humble to ever seek the spotlight, those who know this club have always known the scale of what he’s done. This award is a fitting tribute to a lifetime of commitment.
Mike still works a full week at Baker Joiner, while also serving as Chairman of the Midland Football League, and continues to follow Chasetown FC home and away, rolling up his sleeves midweek to get stuck in with whatever needs doing around the ground — whether it’s advice, maintenance, organisation, or simply being a steady presence.
It’s almost impossible to list all that Mike has done — not just for Chasetown FC, but for football at large. His stories are unforgettable: tales of triumphs, setbacks, and surreal moments like sharing a red carpet with Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. But no matter how far the journey has taken him, Mike has always been firmly rooted at Chasetown.
He’s not just our honorary president — he’s our founder and, quite simply, the reason we’re all here. Generations of players, managers, fans and volunteers have been shaped by his influence and inspired by his example.
Alongside this tribute, we’re proud to share a photo of Mike with another Chasetown legend, former manager Charlie Blakemore — a moment that perfectly captures the legacy and leadership that has defined our club for decades.
So from everyone at Chasetown FC — past and present — thank you, Mike. Your dedication, loyalty, and love for the club have given us something truly special.
Congratulations on your award, Mr Joiner. Nobody deserves it more.
