Manager Charlie Blakemore opted to utilise his squad, making ten changes to the side that drew with Barton Rovers on Saturday, drafting in the majority of the players on the fringe of the first team and how they responded with a superb team performance, topped off by that late winner.
Chasetown looked eager to impress in the opening stages with Dave Woodvine finding a well timed ball for Karl Edwards to race onto. The striker checked before laying the ball back into the path of Neil Aulton who just leant back into the shot to send it over the bar.
Young keeper Matt Sargeant was also in the thick of things as the game opened out, collecting a low drive from Alex Lavers. At the other end, Chris Jay grabbed a free kick from Aulton, but the Swifts keeper was left flat footed when Danny Smith looped a header past him but the ball just drifted wide of the post.
Aulton seemed involved in every Chasetown move in the opening twenty minutes and when a short corner was played to him the attacking wing back delivered into a crowded area and Edwards met the ball with an acrobatic scissors kick that flashed wide of the target.
Stourport almost caught out the Scholars when new signing Nathan Jukes took a free kick quickly, slipping the ball into the path of skipper Peter Wood who wasted the opportunity by dragging his shot wide. The visitors came even closer moments later when Jukes struck a long range shot that crashed against the crossbar with Sargeant just managing to get the slightest of touches to the effort.
Smith was causing real problems for the Swifts defence and his movement in the area enabled the striker to make room for a close range shot that hit the side netting.
Sargeant added to his rapidly growing reputation as a good shot stopper as he flung himself full length to push away a rising shot after the Scholars had lost the ball on the right.
Danny Smith went on another mazy run that seemed to take on the whole Swifts defence as just when it looked that the visitors had closed down the space the Port Vale goal scoring hero somehow found the gap to hit a magnificent rising shot past Jay on 31 minutes.
That prompted a number of chances to fall to Smith who could have easily trebled his scoring tally. Ben Steane’s cross field pass to Paul Spacey set up the next chance as his cross saw Smith put header wide. The Steane – Spacey combination again set up the young forward, but the pitch played it’s part as the ball just bobbled before it reached Smith and the final effort flew over the bar.
Stourport looked a more determined outfit after the interval, but it was the inspirational Steane who was still calling the shots in midfield sending in a teasing ball that Smith just could not get the vital touch to.
On 67 minute the visitors were handed a lifeline. A ball in from the Chasetown left was heading for Lavers, but the Swifts player was nudged in the back by Spacey and the referee pointed straight to the spot. Jukes set himself up to slam the ball high to Sargeant's right to level the scores.
That prompted a good spell from the visitors and after another error on the left Willetts was left clean through on goal. Sargeant stood up well but the former Rushall Olympic striker went sprawling under the keepers challenge, but the penalty appeals were waved away.
The winner came in the 83rd minute from a long throw from Aulton. That caused panic in the Stourport area and after two attempts to clear; the ball fell for Todd Perry who instantly guided a looping header over Jay to settle the game.
