The Scholars gave their hosts a lesson in finishing at Creasey Park to come away from their midweek trek to Bedfordshire with three more points as Charlie Blakemore’s men continue to hack away at the leading teams writes Russell Brown.
Dunstable will be disappointed after they had their chances against their visitors, but once again their indifferent home form came back to haunt the Blues and send them to a third home loss of the season.
Chasetown relied upon the same team that had comprehensively beat struggling Malvern Town 4-0 on Saturday but came across a Dunstable side eager to forget their last minute home defeat to Bishops Cleeve. Neil Perrin fired a shot over the crossbar before Matt Baldry and Perrin again both came close.
Despite the early advantage, the home side could not find the final touch to some good approach play and that was to cost them dear as Chasetown opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a blistering shot from Nick Hawkins to register his fourth league goal of the season.
Stunned by that Dunstable tried to regroup, but right on half time Chasetown delivered another knockout blow as top scorer Dean Perrow conjured up his 16th goal of the season to double the lead with yet another fine finish.
Hope was restored for the Creasey Park side as the hard working Chris Marsh thundered in a volley that gave keeper Lee Evans no chance of reaching in the 56th minute and for a while Dunstable had their sights set on an equaliser.
However an error of judgement from Paul Taylor was to prove fatal for the Blues as the keeper raced out in an attempt to clear the ball. But the pace of Danny Smith enabled the speedy striker to embarrass Taylor to take the ball around him and slot into an empty net on 61 minutes.
All credit to the home side who refused to let their heads drop and Dunstable were offered another way into the game with a late penalty after new signing Andy Penny had been adjudged to have fouled Marsh in the area. Evans saved well from the spot kick but was unfortunate to see the ball rebound straight back to the penalty taker and Marsh buried the rebound with two minutes left.
The game was finally put beyond Dunstable when substitute Nathan Lamey lined up a last minute free kick and his quality finish from the set piece meant there was no way back for the Bedfordshire side.
