Both teams were going through a lean spell and with neither side having hit the net in either of their last two outings, this game never looked to be a goal fest.
With top scorer Dean Perrow still ruled out with flu, manager Charlie Blakemore did have midfielder Ben Steane available after his illness and named Nathan Lamey up front to partner Danny Smith as the Scholars looked to end their goal drought.
Chasetown started off the brighter and it was a nervous start for keeper Andrew Kemp who fumbled an early Dean Craven free kick in his area, but fortunately, United had bodies in numbers to clear the loose ball. Another error from Kemp, this time choosing a poor throw out that was easily intercepted by Danny Smith, but once again, Chasetown just could not turn the mistake to their advantage.
Craven once again delivered a fine ball into the area and Scott Clamp directed a header wide of the post.
The game was starting to get a little feisty and with former Scholars midfielder Ben Twigger and defender Jason Williams already in the referee’s notebook, Danny Pitham was fortunate not to join his colleagues after a crude challenge on Smith created a mini scuffle between the two sides.
United started to come more into the game and forced the shot on target when Adam Kinder hit a fierce shot from a narrow angle that Lee Evans had to turn aside for a corner. From the flag kick Gilbert Cummins should have done far better than to steer the ball wide after the youngster was left unmarked in the area.
Chasetown were guilty of losing possession on the left and Paddy Connelley quickly squared for Kinder but the Greenback’s striker planted a tame effort straight at Evans.
United finished the half on a high when the pacy Akim Aladatown span away from his marker to take his chance early but the youngster was well off target with his low effort.
The visitors were fortunate when Aladetown over ran the ball when a cross field pass caught Evans out of position and Andy Penny was on hand to take the ball away from the striker. Chasetown countered and Steane’s quick thinking could have embarrassed Kemp as the keeper cleared a long ball forward well outside his area with his head, but the midfielders attempt to lob the ball back into an empty net was wide.
The Bedworth goal came in the 64th minute and it had a real touch of fortune about it. Jamie Williams embarked on a good run on the United left flank and his low ball into the area was aimed for Aladetown. Joe Williams had read the pass and he slid in to make a clearance only to see the ball ricochet off the striker’s shins and cannon straight back through the legs of Evans into the net.
The visitors tried to hit back and Smith came close before a corner slipped straight through a crowded area with just a touch required from the Chasetown forwards.
Substitute Nick Hawkins was just off target with an effort after being set up by Steane, but the closest the Scholars came to rescuing the game saw Lamey’s well struck shot being tipped over the cross bar by Kemp.
