An entertaining first half saw chances at each end, the pick of which came in the 27th minute when John Bateman produced a fantastic save to deny Sporting Khalsa’s Brad Lawley giving his side the lead when one-one-one with the Chase keeper.
At the other end, Chasetown had gone close with a Lee Butler free kick while he also had a shot blocked after a great run by Ramone Stephens.
It was new signing Nathan Waite that assisted the breakthrough though, in the 36th minute. He picked out a pass to Nick Wellecomme, and last year’s leading scorer scored his second goal of pre-season with a close range tap-in.
Bateman, who made one first team appearance for Chasetown last season, preserved the Scholars lead a minute later with a great stop to deny Tom Overfield in another Khalsa attack.
Wellecomme almost doubled his tally following a through ball from substitute Luke Bottomer but one-one-one with James Pemberton, the Khalsa keeper came out on top.
Jazz Luckie went close to adding to Chasetown’s advantage, in a half that the visitors dominated, forcing a low save from Pemberton, who managed to divert the ball far enough away from the onrushing Lee Downes.
