The match started slowly, with both sides struggling to impose themselves in the opening exchanges. Chasetown’s first real effort fell to Danny Glover, but the experienced forward dragged his shot just wide of the post. Despite winning a flurry of corners, the Scholars struggled to make them count, with Wulfrunians holding firm under pressure.
It was midway through the first half when Chasetown finally broke the deadlock. Cater, sharp to intercept a loose pass, drove forward and unleashed a shot, but the ball deflected into the path of Yates. The midfielder remained composed, slotting the ball home to give the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead.
The second half kicked off with a bang, as Glover, always a threat, doubled Chasetown’s advantage. After Evans was brought down on the edge of the area, Glover stepped up to take the resulting free-kick. His effort was sublime, curling off the inside of the post and beyond the reach of Wulfrunians’ keeper Sam Arnold.
At 2-0, Chasetown appeared to be in control, but Wulfrunians quickly found a way back into the contest, albeit through an unfortunate own goal. A dangerous Ryan Bright cross caused panic in the Chasetown defence, and in the ensuing scramble, the ball found its way into the net.
Sensing a shift in momentum, Wulfrunians pressed for an equaliser, and it came minutes later through Freddie Cockerell. Finding space in the box, Cockerell calmly slotted his shot past Matt Sargeant to bring the visitors level, setting up a nervy final period.
With the scores locked at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the tie went to penalties. Chasetown, cool under pressure, converted four of their spot-kicks, while Sargeant produced a crucial save to deny Wulfrunians. The decisive penalty, taken by Cunningham, sent the Scholars through to the next round with a 4-2 shootout win.
Attention now turns to Saturday's league fixture against Mossley, but for now, Chasetown can celebrate a hard-fought victory and a place in the next round of the Walsall Senior Cup.
