The match began with both teams cautious in possession, testing each other's defensive lines but struggling to find any real rhythm going forward. Chasetown’s Butlin had the first effort of the game, forcing Harding into a straightforward save.
Soon after, a well-worked move on the left wing between Dunne and Cater set up a dangerous cross into the box, but Butlin couldn’t get past Banbury’s Harding and the chance went begging.
Butlin had another attempt from distance, but his shot drifted wide of the target, offering no real threat to the Banbury goal. A few minutes later, Cater delivered a promising corner kick, which found a Chasetown player in space, but the header went off target and failed to test the keeper.
Banbury had limited success in attack during the first half. Yates had a low shot from outside the box, but it veered well wide of the post, while another chance came from a corner, but Fenton’s header was off target.
Things took a turn for Chasetown just before the break, as they were reduced to ten men following a straight red card for Thompson.
The second half saw Yates fire another shot at goal, but it again missed the mark, much to Chasetown’s frustration.
The visitors thought they had taken the lead when Yaw bundled the ball into the net, but the officials ruled it out for offside in the build-up, denying Banbury the breakthrough they had been looking for.
Late in the match, Banbury launched a counter-attack, with their winger racing down the flank and delivering a low cross into the box. A Banbury striker looked set to tap the ball into an empty net, but Chasetown’s defenders made a crucial clearance off the line, denying the visitors what seemed like a certain goal.
Due to a 0-0 finish both teams will have to have a replay soon to decide who goes through to the next round.
