The game got off to an exciting start when Chasetown came close to breaking the deadlock early. Butlin struck a powerful volley that flew just wide of the target, but the visitors didn’t have to wait long for their breakthrough. Yates capitalized on a deflected ball to slot home Chasetown's first goal, sending the travelling fans into celebration.
However, Banbury weren’t to be outdone, and their equalizer came just moments later. Stokoe pounced to level the score, and with that, the game was wide open. Chasetown almost regained the advantage through Thompson, whose thunderous shot flew over the bar, leaving the Scholars to wonder what might have been.
As the second half unfolded, Banbury looked the more dangerous side for a brief spell, with a shot whizzing narrowly past Pond’s post. Chasetown responded with a series of efforts, none more significant than Butlin’s effort, which was well saved by Banbury goalkeeper Harding. Substitution Langston also had a chance, deflecting a shot just wide as the Scholars pushed for a winner.
The game continued to intensify into extra time. In the first 15 minutes, Banbury thought they had found the lead, but Pond was equal to the task, making a crucial save with a strong palm to deny the hosts. Webster came agonizingly close with a rocket of a shot that cannoned off the post and flew over the bar, leaving the fans on the edge of their hopes.
With the match still tied at 1-1, the last 15 minutes of extra time brought more drama. Chasetown's hopes of a winner looked alive when the ball ricocheted across the penalty area, landing at Webster’s feet. His strike, however, was just wide of the mark. In the dying moments, Yates sent in a cross that flashed across the face of goal, but no one could get the vital touch.
The final whistle blew with the score still deadlocked at 1-1, and it was penalty shootout time. Both teams held their nerve through the early rounds, but in the end, Banbury’s precision from the spot proved decisive, as they triumphed 5-3.
While Chasetown may have been eliminated from the FA Cup, the team’s determination and spirit shone throughout the contest and now they take their focus back to the league fixture on Saturday against Trafford.
