It was a typical game of two halves. Romulus created next-to-nothing in the first half, giving the ball away cheaply and allowing Chasetown the lion’s share of the possession and the better chances.
Nick Wellecomme and Nathan Waite combined early on and Paul Evans kept out Waite’s header as the visitors put the home side under pressure. Then, Roms left back Cameron Lee let the ball slip under his foot and Waite reacted quickest to fire a low shot to Evans’ right and he got down low and tipped the ball around the post.
Before then, Chasetown had all the better chances and twice home keeper Paul Evans denied Nathan Waite, firstly with a low save round the post and secondly punching away in front of his body.
Romulus were stronger after the break, denying Chasetown from really getting a shot on target. Their best chance came when substitute Jermaine Johnson chested the ball down in the path of Simon Brown and Evans pushed aside for a corner.
The home side forced John Bateman to tip over his crossbar, when James Reid's dipping shot looked to have broken the deadlock.
Smith's winner, 7 minutes from time, inflicted Chasetown's first ever defeat on Sutton's 3G pitch.
As Chasetown pushed forward for an equaliser, the Roms broke quickly and James Reid had a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 but Bateman spread his body to block the attempt.
