After a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup and dominating large periods of the replay that they eventually lost, they dominated large parts of the league fixture tonight and were denied by a brilliant late goal-line clearance.
An early chance to Nick Wellecomme was all that came from the Scholars number 9 as he limped out of the action after just 8 minutes with a groin strain, to be replaced by Simon Brown.
Without him, Chasetown struggled to keep the ball up front, although the visitors did have a lucky escape when a Lee Butler cross eluded Nathan Waite and ricocheted off defender James Askey and luckily for Adam Alcock bounced safely into his hands.
Newcastle had the majority of shots in the first half and took the lead in the 54th minute when Dexter Ravenhill was adjudged to have tripped Ben Mills and Matthew Lowe sent John Bateman the wrong way from the penalty spot.
The home side were a whisker away from levelling when a Brown free kick thundered narrowly over the crossbar eluding the Newcastle defensive wall.
Another free kick, midway through the half saw full back Todd Evans test Alcock but the ‘Castle keeper stood firm.
Chasetown eventually levelled 14 minutes from time when Simon Brown was sent tumbling by visiting keeper Adam Alcock as he pushed the ball beyond the 'Castle keeper. Alcock received a yellow card and Brown himself sent a powerful penalty into the roof of the net.
Late on, Josh Gordon fired goalwards and beyond Bateman but somehow skipper Chris Slater got back to wrap his foot around the ball and clear off the goal line.
