League leaders come out on top

League leaders come out on top

Paul Mullins29 Oct 2014 - 17:26

The fourth meeting of these sides this season saw Newcastle victorious for the first time.

Newcastle came into this game top of the league and remained there after two second half goals took the game by the scruff of its neck.

An even first half saw what few chances there were fall to the home side. Matt Lowe forced two saves from John Bateman while Chasetown's best attempt saw Nick Wellecomme's right footed effort saved by Ryan Boot’s right hand with an opportunity almost out of nothing.

The home side had corner after corner in a dominant opening few minutes but at the interval, a goalless half was a fair reflection on the proceedings.

'Castle took the lead early in the second half with a neat finish from Lowe and almost added a second when Elliott Osbourne hit the crossbar from close range.

Tom France doubled the home side's lead with just over twenty minutes remaining driving the ball into an empty net after Bateman's punched a cross clear but, unfortunately, the ball fell straight to the midfielder's feet who drilled home from outside the box.

Chasetown pulled a goal back when Jack Lees poked home a Simon Brown free kick but it was too little too late for The Scholars with Jermaine Johnson on the line trying to help the ball over.

The league leaders were worthy winners though, opening up a five point advantage at the top of the division.

Chasetown: Bateman, Johnson, Haynes, Slater (Evans, HT), Miles, Downes, Brown, Parsons, Wellecomme, Waite (Lees, 86 mins), Davies (Edwards, 64 mins)

Other subs: Robinson, McDonald (not used)
