Former Scholars keeper Lee Evans was the visitors’ hero making a string of saves in the second half as Chasetown looked in determined fashion to take all three points.
The away side started more brightly, as perhaps would be expected from the league leaders. Sutton’s Jordan Nadat saw two early efforts blocked by Grant Beckett as the league leaders started brightly before John Bateman pushed a Justin Richards shot wide of the post.
Chasetown were camped inside their own half for long periods with a solitary effort from Richard Davies which Evans rushed out to smother the best they had offered.
That was, until Chasetown took the lead just shy of the half hour mark. Danny Edwards curling corner was inadvertently headed away from goal by his own man Asa Charlton but when it came back out to Danny Edwards his second cross was beyond the far post, headed back across goal by Leon Miles and leading scorer Nathan Waite poached from close range to flick it past Evans.
Spurred on, Evans punched to the feet of Lee Parsons who was a whisker wide of the upright with a first time shot and then Danny Griffiths fired narrowly over the bar from twenty yards just before the interval.
After the break, Chasetown were rampant. Waite had two shots saved by Evans and then Danny Griffiths hit the post with Evans beaten, the rebound hitting Waite rather than him being able to adjust his body to get a shot away.
Against the run of the second half play, midway through the half, the Royals levelled with a Richards’ free kick that flew beyond Bateman.
Almost immediately, the Scholars had to clear off the line, but it was the home side that regained control and substitute Nick Wellecomme saw Evans dive low to his left to keep out a shot, before Miles’ header was saved by Evans following another Edwards’ free kick.
The Goalline Decision System from the Premier League would have been put to the test before the end when Wellecomme’s acrobatic overhead kick was deemed not to have crossed the line by the officials and the sixth consecutive league draw between the two sides was confirmed.
