Chasetown sweep past local rivals

Paul Mullins16 Aug 2022 - 20:58

Report by media student Ryan Robinsonm

Chasetown contested a midweek local derby versus Sutton Coldfield Town and the Scholars did not disappoint the 492 fans in attendance.

Chasetown made a disastrous start when Birmingham City youth product Rhys Hilton was set free 20 yards from goal and sprinted untouched to smash home. giving The Royals the lead and scoring his third goal in two games.

The lead did not last long when former Walsall interest Liam Kirton shot from long range past Jonathan Brown in the visitors goal to level the scores again.

They came close minutes later when Ryan Wynter rose to get his head onto a header which sailed over the bar.

15 minutes in Luke Yates took a shot that landed at the feet of Kirton whose shot took a deflection wide for a goal kick as the last touch was deemed to have come off a Chasetown foot.

The Scholars took the lead when summer recruit Luke Yates went on a solo run which ended in him slotting past the keeper from a tight angle for his first competitive goal in Chasetown blue.

Chasetown made a lightning start to the second half when Kirton made a run and shot which caused the keeper to tip his effort wide.

From the resulting corner captain Danny O’Callaghan rose highest and nodded home to make his tally two goals in two games.

The second half was played at a slower pace with the only other chance in the first 15 minutes being a free kick bent narrowly wide.

Chasetown came close when there was a goalmouth scramble which ended in Jon Letford hitting wide.

Sutton’s only chance of the half was a cross which Jordan Evans narrowly diverted wide of his own goal.

Chase had another chance when Yates hit a shot which was diverted narrowly wide by the keeper.

The Scholars thought it was four when Yates crossed to Mitchell Clarke who slotted home only for his celebrations to be cut short by the assistant referee's flag.
