Match Report by Lizz Scott

In a match that started sluggishly, Chasetown ultimately found their rhythm to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Widnes at The Scholars Ground.

Despite a slow start, it was the brilliance of Jack Langston that proved decisive, with two clinical second-half strikes sealing the win.

The first half offered few clear-cut opportunities for either side. Chasetown looked to seize control as Danny O’Callaghan tried his luck with a powerful long-range effort, which Widnes' goalkeeper fumbled but managed to recover before Ben Lund could pounce. Moments later, an inviting free-kick found O'Callaghan again, but the Widnes defence was quick to react, scrambling the ball away to safety.

Chasetown's most promising moment of the half came from Langston, who rattled the top right corner of the post with a fierce shot, leaving fans wondering how the ball hadn’t found the back of the net. Despite their persistence, the Scholars went into the break frustrated, still locked in a goalless stalemate.

The second half saw a rejuvenated Chasetown side take the initiative. After a cagey start, a lifeline arrived in the form of a penalty, won after sustained pressure in the Widnes box. Langston stepped up and coolly slotted the ball home, sending the keeper the wrong way to give the Scholars a deserved lead.

Not content with just one, Langston struck again shortly after. His low-driven free-kick beat the wall and the Widnes keeper, doubling Chasetown’s advantage and giving the home side much-needed breathing room.

However, Widnes weren’t about to roll over. With just under 15 minutes to play, Matty Rain fired a curling shot into the far corner from the edge of the box, denying Curtis Pond his clean sheet and setting up a difficult finish. Chasetown, though, held firm, managing the game professionally to see out the 2-1 win.
