Chasetown moved up to seventh place and made it back-to-back league wins on a cold and misty night at the Scholars Ground.
The Scholars made two changes from the starting eleven that beat Wythenshawe; new signing Tom Thorley made his debut, and Jordan Evans returned to the line-up.
The first half saw a number of half-chances for the Scholars. After some neat interplay down the left, Danny Glover pulled his shot past the post, Joey Butlin hooked a Kris Taylor corner inches wide, and Mitchell Clarke had a header cleared just off the goal line. Atherton struggled to test Curtis Pond in the Chasetown goal, largely resorting to long-range efforts.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first. Glover headed onto the roof of the net before Butlin fired wide from a promising position inside the box. Yet it was the away side who took the lead when Ethan Kershaw broke down the right, crossing for Will Riding to slot home.
Mark Swann's side weren't to be disheartened, though, and responded almost immediately. The visitors' attempt to clear from a corner fell to Thorley on the edge of the box, who found Butlin in space to head home the equaliser.
Ten minutes later, the turnaround was complete when Evans' cross ricocheted off Atherton's Toba Obitayo into the path of George Cater, who netted his eighth goal of the season.
It should have been three for the Chase when Butlin was put through late on, only to be denied by Sol Honor's outstretched hand. However, the majority of the 234 in attendance went home happy with three points secured ahead of Saturday's trip to leaders Widnes.
