Wynter earns point in wintery conditions

Paul Mullins29 Nov 2015 - 09:40

In poor weather conditions, Chasetown battled to a very good away point at high-flying Shaw Lane Aquaforce.

After surviving some early pressure from the hosts, Chasetown took the lead after 28 minutes. Stan Mugisha eluded a foul from Luke O’Brien and slid the ball across to Ryan Wynter who finished comfortably from close range.

The hosts had gone close in the opening minutes with John Bateman making a fingertip save from Lee Bennett.

Bateman made a string of fine saves to keep the score 1-0 denying Bennett again as well as from Gavin Allot and Phil Dean.

Then makeshift defender Danny Edwards superbly cleared off the line to deny Allot before the break.

At the start of the second period, with the rain teeming down, Mugisha almost doubled Chasetown’s lead with a bending shot that was brilliantly pushed over by Ian Deakin.

Aquaforce thoroughly deserved an equaliser just before the hour mark as Bennett fired a dipping shot out of the reach of a diving Bateman.

Shaw Lane should have taken the lead within seconds of levelling. Allot outpaced the Chasetown defence and slipped a pass beyond Bateman to Bennett who somehow managed to scuff a shot straight back to what should have been a stranded keeper.

As news came in that games at Sheffield and Harrogate had been abandoned due to the weather, it was no surprise that the supporters were keeping one eye on the weather. The pitch being used for Barnsley Rugby Club at times made playing extremely difficult.

To both sides credit, they avoided passing the ball through the worst affected parts of the field and Referee Mr Atkin saw no reason to abandon the game.

Late on, Wynter fired an effort which looked goalbound but unfortunately for the Scholars it slammed against teammate Nick Turton and the hosts cleared the danger.

Chasetown: Bateman, Williams (Haynes, HT), Edwards, Thompson, Dance, Brown, Mugisha, Davies, Wynter, Sullivan (Turton, 81 mins), Gould (Washbourne, 66 mins)

Other subs: Robinson, Kiembi (not used)
