Goal in each half dents play off hopes

Goal in each half dents play off hopes

Paul Mullins27 Jan 2016 - 08:16

Chasetown's first trip to Basford ended in defeat as the hosts netted twice without reply.

Chasetown started brightly and an early chance fell to Stan Mugisha whose first time volley was well held by home keeper Jake Wood.

Leading scorer Paul Sullivan then drove a shot a whisker wide inside the first quarter of the game.

The hosts took the lead against the run of the early play. Courey Grantham powered a header against the crossbar and Rob Darkin bundled home.

Wood had a lucky escape at the end of the half, miskicking a through ball but Mugisha was unable to capitalise and the United defence cleared.

Richard Davies was denied by a brilliant save at the start of the second period from Wood from the Chase midfielder’s volley.

Chasetown continued to push for an equaliser and Jono Gould’s in swinging corner was headed goalwards by Ryan Wynter and deflected onto the crossbar.

Basford doubled their lead in the 80th minute. Kyle Dixon forced a brilliant save from John Bateman but Ruben Wiggins-Thomas followed up to smash the ball home.
