Inside two minutes, Stan Mugisha took the ball beyond the keeper Stewart Parsons but Cameron Lee got back to clear the danger.
Mike Williams had Parsons in all sorts of trouble with a looping cross but the frame of the goal came to Romulus’ rescue.
Paul Sullivan then twisted and turned through the Roms defence but Parsons got down brilliantly to save for a corner.
Barry Fitzharris was a whisker over the bar with a long range effort before Parsons made a low save to deny Stan Mugisha just before the half-time interval.
Midway through an even second half, substitute Jono Gould opened up the visitors defence and, as he was tackled, the loose ball ran to Mugisha who struck the crossbar with a first time shot.
Chasetown looked the most likely to open the scoring and Ryan Wynter dragged a shot inches wide of the post.
Sullivan had the ball in the net after Gould and Wynter combined but Roms were saved by the Assistant's offside flag.
In the final minutes The Scholars thought they had earned a late penalty as Gould was pulled back attempting to reach a Sullivan pass but referee Dwyer turned away the appeals.
Romulus took a shock lead against the run of play with a goal from former scholar Chad Degville which deflected past John Bateman.
Chasetown then straight went up the other end and Sullivan beat Parsons with a low shot to his right.
