Slates breaks league record and Turts fires winner

Paul Mullins24 Feb 2016 - 22:54

Chris Slater made a record breaking 397th league appearance and now sits one appearance behind Andy Cox's all-time record of 535 games.

The hosts took the lead in the 16th minute when Chris Boast nipped in at the far post to net unmarked.

Chasetown were close to an equaliser five minutes later when Stan Mugisha embarked on a mazy run to tee up Paul Sullivan whose shot was kicked away by keeper Ben Chapman.

The visitors drew level in the 35th minute with a stunning equaliser. Sullivan flicked the ball into the path of Henry Eze who had stolen forward from defence and lashed an unstoppable shot beyond a bemused Chapman.

The second half began with the hosts on top and Eze had to clear an Anthony Malbon shot off the line before Joe Woolley struck the base of the Scholars post.

On the hour Grove full back Chris Smith tried an ambitious effort from all of 40 yards that John Bateman had to react quickly to push it aside.

Kidsgrove spurned a glorious chance to regain the lead. Malbon beat the offside trap and was clean through on Bateman but he took the ball wide of the keeper and inexplicably fired wide of an open goal.

Against the run of the chances, Chasetown took the lead with 15 minutes remaining. Sullivan broke from midfield, out pacing two defenders to cut the ball back to substitute Nick Turton who made no mistake from inside the 6 yard box.

On a night where skipper Chris Slater made his 397th league appearance to move top of Chasetown’s all time league appearances, the three points saw Chasetown edge back into the play off positions.
