Chasetown came from behind to boost their play off hopes.
The Scholars made several threats on the home goal but failed to trouble Dave Parton in the Castle goal during the first 45.
The hosts should have broken the deadlock when Dan Cope and Jordan Cole combined but Cope shot straight at keeper John Bateman.
Chase defender Chris Slater made his 536th appearance, a club record, and was called into action on the half hour to clear the ball off the line to deny Cole.
In the final minute of the first half, Newcastle took the lead when the ball struck the base of the post and Cole tucked home the rebound.
In the 55th minute, Chasetown levelled after George Washbourne swept a majestic crossfield pass to Jed Davies and Davies’ cross was met by Washbourne who had stolen in unmarked to head in off the post.
After the equaliser, Parton was the busier keeper, first saving from substitute Paul Sullivan and then denying Jed Davies’ effort from outside of the penalty area.
With 17 minutes remaining, Chasetown opened up the Newcastle defence with a fast paced move involving Richard Davies, Washbourne and Jed Davies. Davies’ drive to the near post was palmed out by Parton and Sullivan followed up from close range.
