Play off hopes extinguished

Play off hopes extinguished

Paul Mullins9 Jul 2013 - 14:45

Chasetown’s last away fixture of the season saw hopes of making the playoffs extinguished with a 4-0 defeat at Kendal Town.

Despite a good start a lucky goal on 28 minutes set the hosts on their way and they were able to control things despite some hard work during the second half by the Scholars.

Chase started the better side with plenty of chances over the opening minutes, Richard Teesdale heading goalwards from a Mark Branch free kick on four minutes but keeper Tom Newton was able to gather before three minutes later the Town keeper pushed a shot from Dean Perrow over the bar.

Despite a fine showing in the first quarter of the game, it was the home side who would take the lead on 28 minutes when a long free kick from Kieran Walmsley bounced over Scholars keeper Richard Woolley and into the net.

Chasetown rallied but the hosts were fired up by the goal and Walmsley and Gary McEvatt went close for them before they doubled their lead just before the break. Another free kick was palmed out by Woolley with the follow-up cleared off the line but only as far as skipper Shaun Gray who had little trouble in making it 2-0.

The visitors showed some signs of a fightback as the second half began, Perrow’s cross landing on the roof of the net and the Town defence blocking a shot from Richard Davies after good work by Jack Farmer and Jimmy Turner.

Walmsley would enjoy two further efforts with one shot flying well over the bar and Woolley saving a free kick, but Chasetown continued to work well in midfield.

Farmer and Matty Cohen looked lively for the Scholars but no goals were forthcoming, Gray then going close for the home side with a header but Woolley was able to save.

On 84 minutes Kendal stretched their lead when substitute Carl Osman’s first touch saw him head a corner into the net, and the hosts would put the lid on it in the final minute when another free kick from Walmsley flew over Woolley on the edge of his box and into the net.

Chasetown: Woolley, Farmer (Westwood, 72 mins), M Branch, Turner, Cohen, Teesdale, J Branch, Davies, Smith (Stephens, 66 mins), Perrow, Parsons (Birch, 60 mins)

Other Subs: Bridgwater, Spence (not used)
