The game kicked off with an early chance for Yates, who attempted a delicate lob over Trafford keeper Eastham, but the goalkeeper was quick to react and gathered the ball with ease. A brief stoppage in play followed to repair the net in Trafford's goal, a disruption that did little to slow down the game’s tempo. Evans then floated a well-weighted ball into Langston, whose poke towards goal was expertly saved by Eastham.
Moments later, Clarke rose highest at a corner but could only direct his header onto the roof of the net. Trafford’s Norris had a chance to test Pond when he met a cross with his head, but Pond was there to claim it comfortably.
It was Trafford who broke the deadlock, in the most unfortunate of ways. A cross into the box led to a miscommunication between Pond and Evans, with the ball inadvertently bundled into the back of Chasetown’s net for an own goal, gifting Trafford a lead they scarcely deserved. However, Chasetown responded with urgency, and just before the break, Langston had a chance to level, but his strike fizzed narrowly wide of Eastham’s post.
In the dying moments of the first half, Evans made amends for his earlier misfortune. A free-kick, taken from just outside the box, beat Eastham at his near post to bring Chasetown level and leave the scores tied at 1-1 heading into the break.
The second half saw both teams continue to press for the decisive goal. Langston had another opportunity early on, but his shot was bravely blocked by the resilient Trafford defence. Wilding then came agonizingly close to putting Chasetown ahead, as his shot was almost turned home by Cook, but Trafford’s defence scrambled to clear the danger.
However, just after the hour mark, it was Chasetown who regained the lead through a clinical strike from Butlin. Fed through by his teammates, Butlin showed composure to slot the ball under Eastham from a tight angle, making it 2-1 to the visitors.
The game was put beyond doubt just minutes later when Thorley’s speculative effort took a deflection and wrong-footed Eastham, nestling into the back of the net to make it 3-1 in Chasetown’s favour. Trafford had no answer to the visitors’ clinical finishing, and Chasetown cruised to a well-deserved victory.
