The early exchanges saw Chasetown trying to get forward. Ferrier whipped a cross into the box, but there was nobody there to meet it and Madigan gathered comfortably. Butlin then made a determined run down the flank, only to be stopped in his tracks before he could create a clear opportunity.

Mossley made their pressure count when Fawns opened the scoring, firing past Pond to give the visitors the lead. Chasetown tried to respond, with Yates attempting to thread a ball through, but it came to nothing and Madigan collected comfortably.

The ball was worked back to Thompson as Chasetown looked to build momentum. A brilliant cross from Yates found Butlin, who laid it off to Wilding, but the move broke down before a shot could trouble the goal.

A free kick caused a frantic scramble in the box before the ball was eventually smashed clear — and out of the ground altogether. Evans then delivered a superb cross straight to Butlin, but the keeper was equal to it with a solid save. Another Evans free kick followed soon after, though it failed to produce a breakthrough.

Chasetown came agonisingly close when a goalmouth scramble ended with the ball crashing against the post. Butlin later tried his luck from range, but his effort drifted wide. They eventually found a way through as Thompson struck an effort that cannoned off the post and rebounded into the net, giving Chasetown hope going into the break.

The second half, however, ultimately belonged to Mossley. Fawns added his second of the afternoon to restore their advantage. Pond then produced a breathtaking save as Mossley threatened to put the game beyond reach, denying them on three quick occasions to keep Chasetown well in the game.

A cross flashed across the face of goal but was missed entirely, summing up a frustrating spell for Chasetown. Ferrier later delivered into Langston, who drove forward before squaring the ball to Spinelli, but the attempt ended in a slip in the mud and the chance was gone.

Mossley’s Fawns then completed his hat-trick with another well-taken finish, and Mossley added further gloss to the scoreline when Webb-Foster found the net late on.
