The game began with Chasetown showing early intent as Langston’s first effort of the night flew over the bar. Atherton responded quickly, with Reeves driving forward and forcing an early corner. Soon after, Ajayi found space on the edge of the area but fired well over.

Atherton continued to test from distance, Barry striking a decent effort that was comfortably held. At the other end, Efunnuga slipped in Piggott, but his low shot was easily saved by Pond in the Atherton goal.

A spell of Atherton pressure followed, resulting in two consecutive corners, with the visitors narrowly missing the target from the second. Chasetown’s first corner of the night came soon after, but it was cleared with ease.

The breakthrough came for the visitors when Evans turned Nocks’ free kick into his own net, giving Atherton the lead. Chasetown responded well and found an equaliser shortly after to bring the score level.

Atherton pushed again, earning another corner that saw a header glance wide of the far post. Moments later, another chance from a corner was tipped over brilliantly by Pond.

Hayward produced an excellent last-ditch challenge when it looked as though Atherton could be through on goal. However, the visitors restored their lead as Warren finished clinically to make it 2–1.

Pond was again called into action, diving to turn Peet’s shot wide before safely claiming the resulting corner. Chasetown rallied late on, forcing two corners of their own, but both were well defended. In the final moments, Clarke’s header went straight into the keeper’s arms, summing up a frustrating night of loss for the Scholars.
