The match got off to an active start at The Scholars Ground.

Chasetown opened the scoring early in the 3rd minute when Matt Hearsey took on a Stalybridge defender, beat his man, and slid a ball across the box to the waiting Kyle Moseley, who slotted it home to put Chasetown in front at 1–0.

Stalybridge Celtic responded well despite going a goal down, with the first free kick of the game in the 8th minute going behind for a Chasetown goal kick.

By the 15th minute, Chasetown was working well in both defence and attack, keeping Stalybridge Celtic out and looking to go forward whenever they had the ball.

Stalybridge Celtic struck back in the 23rd minute when their number 9, Ruben Jerome, scored the equaliser to make it 1–1.

As the game passed the half-hour mark in the 30th minute, Stalybridge Celtic stepped up their pressure, forcing Chasetown to defend much more deeper.

Chasetown started to attack again around the 36th minute and earned a free kick, but the resulting set-piece was cleared away by the Stalybridge Celtic defence.

Chasetown pushed further forward in the 40th minute when Oli Hayward used some quick passing and link up play to make his way through the Stalybridge Celtic midfield, laying the ball off to Matt Hearsey, who struck a curling effort that was saved by the Stalybridge Celtic keeper.

Just before half-time, two added minutes of stoppage time were announced in the 45th minute.

The referee blew for half-time shortly after, with both teams going in 1–1 at the break.

Chasetown immediately started the second half on the back foot has Stalybridge Celtic's Lewis Rawsthorn put the visitors in front on the 46th minute.

By the 53rd minute, Chasetown was trying to find a way back into the game but continued to be frustrated by Stalybridge Celtic.

As the game passed the hour mark in the 62nd minute, Chasetown tried to force their way back into the match and created numerous decent chances, though they remained behind at 1–2.

By the 70th minute, Chasetown held a large percentage of possession and tried to find an equaliser.

Chasetown made a double substitution in the 77th minute, bringing on Matt Funge and Jordan Evans for Kyle Moseley and Taylor Morrison.

Chasetown added a crucial equaliser in the 84th minute when a beautiful cross from Matt Hearsey picked out Matt Funge, who struck it home to level the game at 2–2.

Chasetown made further substitutions later in the game, bringing on Jack Langston for Luke Chapman in the 90th minute, and Marques Trowers for Jordan Evans in the 92nd minute.

Chasetown continued to work hard through the closing stages, successfully seeing out the remainder of the match to secure a hard-fought 2–2 draw at home.
