A positive start putting the hosts under pressure was rewarded with an early goal. Neat, intricate passing got Nathan Rooney into the penalty and an agricultural challenge saw him felled to the floor and no hesitation from Referee Mr Eley to point to the spot.

As he did at Rushden, Rooney took the spot kick and dispatched with power and confidence past Saul Deeney – the first time Chasetown had scored against Basford.

The Scholars rode their luck a little at times. Basford had a couple of goalmouth scrambles and James Dance was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

That apart though, the strong forward play of Mitch Piggon kept Chasetown in possession and Rooney, Dance and the impressive Josh Ruff on the wing got at their hosts as often as they could.

The home side could have levelled though with a dipping Billy Bennett free kick that John Bateman got down superbly to push wide for a corner.

Leon Ashman was dominant in defence, while Chris Slater – reaching another milestone of his 550th appearance – was his imperious best with nothing getting past him on the slick 3G surface at Greenwich Avenue.

Despite that scare though, Chasetown remained on top and Deeney made an outstanding double save to deny a low Rooney drive and then from Mitch Piggon who seemed destined to score.

The second goal finally came on the hour when a powerful run from Jack Langston teed up Piggon who thundered an unstoppable shot past Deeney – Piggon’s first league goal in a Scholars shirt.

Deeney denied Man of the Match Josh Ruff while Chasetown also went close through Ryan Wynter, Pierce Kiembi and Langston as the visitors dominated throughout the 90 minutes. There was even another strong penalty appeal as Kiembi was tugged and then bundled over in the area.

A stoppage time Basford goal from Greg Simmons took some of the gloss off an otherwise excellent away win – as the Scholars made it two wins out of two on their travels and a first ever victory over the Nottinghamshire side.
