Manager Craig Harris talked about a “big week” for the club and it has proved to be a fruitful one – four games, four wins and only one goal conceded. With 6 wins in their last 7 league games, The Scholars still find themselves 11 points short of the play-off positions in eighth place with just eleven games remaining in a congested March and April.
That said, Chasetown have the momentum at the moment and a crop of in-form players at the same time in the season may give Chasetown the edge over their rivals.
After a spell in which everything he touched seemed to be an assist for someone else to score, Nick Wellecomme took his goal tally to 16 for the season and four goals in five days with a brace against Rainworth.
Just two days after a Thursday night rain-battered victory over Heath Hayes, Manager Craig Harris praised the groundstaff for their tremendous hard work to get the game on at all, and the home side responded with a fast paced start.
Inside the first ten minutes, Chasetown had no fewer than three attempts at goal, with Nick Wellecomme twice and Gary Hay firing wide instead of hitting the target.
It was no surprise however when the home side gained the advantage. Nick Wellecomme’s shot took a slight deflection which visiting keeper Allessandro Barcherini misjudged and dived over the ball.
Conor Higginson forced Ryan Price into a first half save but that was just about all Rainworth offered and Price’s fifth clean sheet in 7 games was rarely troubled.
Wellecomme had an effort disallowed for a tight offside before half-time as the Scholars looked to kill the game off within the first period.
Rainworth were fortunate to escape a red card when Gary Hay went round Barcherini outside the area and was hauled by the visiting keeper. In fact, the Rainworth number one was not even carded!
Chasetown doubled their lead when everyone in the defensive wall and in the ground expected a Lee Butler free kick but centre half Tesfa Robinson curled a left footed kick around the wall fooling everybody.
Lee Butler saw a chance cleared off the line by the head of Mark Camm as the Nottinghamshire side were lucky to keep the score down to only 2-0.
Wellecomme added his second of the game after Barcherini saved his first effort and calmly took his time and stroked the rebound under the visiting keeper’s body.
