Not a classic!

Not a classic!

Paul Mullins25 Sep 2013 - 07:34

There would be no question that this game would be a firm candidate for the last match to be shown on an episode of ‘Match of the Day’!

It was hardly a classic, but would be a game that Chasetown would consider they should have won.

It was Chasetown boss Craig Harris’ 50th league match in charge of The Scholars but he would have seen very few games with as little goalmouth action as served up in the first half at the Oval Ground.

Other than a succession of corners, the hosts offered next to nothing in the first half while Chasetown’s two chances fell to Danny Smith – the first, a flicked header wide of the upright from a Simon Brown free kick and the same two combined when Brown’s whipped cross from the right was met by a bullet Smith header from close range, but luckily for Bedworth keeper Andy Kemp he was able to get a strong hand on it to keep it out. Anywhere to either side of Kemp would have been the opening goal.

The Scholars had more urgency in the second half but this was to their cost as Smith burst forward past full back Greg Webb only to pull up as he went into the penalty area with a hamstring injury.

Danny’s loss proved to be Chasetown’s gain as Paul Sullivan came on as sub, returning from his rib injury suffered at Eastwood Town.

Callum Burgess completely misjudged the length of his back pass to Kemp and Sullivan was alive to the danger, nipped in, in front of the goalkeeper and with great composure fired Chasetown ahead.

Any thoughts Chasetown fans had that it was going to be an ugly 1-0 win were soon flattened. As, within two minutes, Mitchell Piggon pulled the trigger with a hard hit shot and it looked like Ryan Price had kept it out, only for the power to be too much as the Greenbacks levelled the scores.

Other than the goals, Chasetown went close with a Brown drive which Kemp did well to save low to his right and Avun Jephcott got a free kick on target but it was weak and easy pickings for Kemp.
