Defeated but valiant

Defeated but valiant

Paul Mullins10 Nov 2013 - 15:00

Chasetown's performance was as good as they had played all season and merited more than going away empty-handed.

If Chasetown could be criticised of anything at Scarborough it would be their failure to take the chances they had, which would have seen them deserved winners at Queensgate, Bridlington.

After an impeccably observed minute’s silence for Remembrance Sunday, Chasetown took the game by the throat and knew that to get a result they would have to play well, and they started extremely brightly.

With Joe Halsall ill and Dean Bennett back with Stourbridge, it was up to Danny Bragoli and Grant Beckett to steer the ship from the centre of the park and after just five minutes it was Bragoli who warmed keeper Jason White’s gloves with a decent effort which made the home side realise Chasetown weren’t here just to make the numbers up.

On the quarter hour, Chasetown were a glove’s thickness away from taking the lead. Paul Sullivan, strong as ever, rode a couple of challenges and slipped the ball into Ramone Stephens. One touch to get it onto his right foot and the second looked like it was bending into the roof of the net until White pulled off a top class save.

Sullivan tested White again before the Seadogs took the lead completely against the run of play. Four minutes before the break, former Birmingham City midfielder Bryan Hughes played a great through ball over the top of Tesfa Robinson and Lewis Clarkson took the ball into his stride and drove over Ryan Price as the Chasetown custodian dashed out.

Midway through the second half, Chasetown had a golden opportunity to level as Stephens burst into the penalty area and whether he shot or tried to pick out Sullivan, neither quite came off and the ball ricocheted off Sullivan’s shins from close in.

Scarborough fans among the large 459 crowd were describing Chasetown as ‘the best they had seen at Queensgate this season’ and the home side had more away pressure to contend with as a Beckett cross reached Stephens who headed it goalwards but straight at White.

Late on, White denied Nick Wellecomme with two chances as Chasetown continued to knock the door but not quite find the breakthrough.

With Scarborough still making good progress in the FA Trophy and moving up the league table in recent weeks, Scholars fans making the 6-hour round trip may have been forgiven for thinking this was a result that was expected in the form guide, but could not have wished from any more from the players during the match.
