For the second consecutive Saturday, the Scholars had the lion’s share of the play, the better chance and dominated the game.

A late goal for the Lincolnshire side – Brigg’s first goal against Chasetown in 6 attempts – gave the Zebras their first ever point against Chasetown, after five previous defeats.

After a minute’s silence in respect of former South African President Nelson Mandela, the game started brightly for Chasetown and they were on the front foot from the kick off.

Within the opening minutes, Joe Halsall tested Jake Turner with a header and then a Dean Bennett corner that looked like it was sailing harmlessly wide for a goal kick virtually hugged the touchline all the way towards the goal and Chasetown appealed that the ball had crossed the line as defender Paul Ashton headed the ball off the line.

It seemed only a matter of time before Chasetown took the lead and the bets move of the half saw Danny Bragoli’s pass flicked on by Nick Wellecomme into the path of Ramone Stephens who’s first time shot was a whisker wide of the post with Turner rooted to the spot.

Just after the half hour, the visitors took the lead with a well-crafted goal. Wellecomme got onto the end of a Chris Slater pass, drew a couple of defenders to him and then slipped a neat pass to the unmarked Simon Brown. Brown had just Turner to beat but still beat him emphatically with a fierce shot into the roof of Turner’s net – his third goal in a week.

The chances kept coming and Turner saved a Wellecomme header, before defender Scott Hellewell threw himself in front of another Wellecomme shot to keep the scoreline 1-0 at the break.

Two minutes after the restart, Stephens had a left foot shot blocked by Turner, his follow up shot with his right was cleared for a corner and then Bennett’s corner was headed against the bar by Tesfa Robinson as Chasetown still searched for that elusive second goal.

Brigg had created next to nothing and in the 68th minute came Chasetown’s first scare in the game when the hosts appealed for handball after the ball bounced up and struck the arm of a Scholars defender in a crowded goalmouth.

Hellewell blocked Wellecomme for a second time with the Scholars Number 9 having done everything except score a goal in this match.

With four minutes remaining, Brigg got their one and only chance in the game and substitute Philip Jackman found space to net a goal completely against the run of play.

In the dying seconds, Wellecomme headed inches wide of the upright and the points were shared.
