Mid-table game ends goalless

Mid-table game ends goalless

Paul Mullins20 Apr 2014 - 07:28

Chasetown manager Craig Harris played a strong line-up, comprising of ten players who are eligible for the Walsall Senior Cup Final.

Only Jack Lees in the starting eleven was signed after the semi-final making him ineligible for the Banks’s Stadium showdown.

But, like so many end of season games, with neither side having a lot to play for, the game lacked any serious amounts of exciting play, with both goalkeepers troubled on a limited number of occasions.

With two games remaining for each side, the Scholars can finish between 9th and 12th (this point lifted them to 11th) while Rainworth can finish between 13th and 16th and remain in 14th.

At least The Scholars Ground was bathed in sunshine for the crowd of 154 to enjoy an otherwise flat game of football.

The first half was littered with some good spells of football but only a confident save from Rainworth keeper James Martin from a Lee Butler free kick was the only real attempt at goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Just after the hour mark, Nick Wellecomme fired in a low shot which Martin got his body behind, while at the other end Jobe Shaw got up highest to meet a corner with a header which went narrowly die of Ryan Price’s left hand upright.

With defences on top, the best move of the game saw substitute Todd Evans sprint down the inside right channel and his cross to the far post was headed a whisker wide by a stretching Wellecomme.

Both keepers were called into action as the half progressed. First, Ryan Price kept his clean sheet intact with a close range save to superbly keep out Jack Hawkins. Then, from a short corner form Butler, Jono Gould curled goalwards and Martin was at full stretch to keep the ball out.

In truth, the game barely deserved a goal but Butler almost nicked all three points in stoppage time with a long range free kick which flashed wide of the target with Martin beaten.
