Scholars persevere to secure semi-final spot (Tom Bowen)

Chasetown had a break from league action on Tuesday night as they faced Lichfield City in the Quarter-Final of the Walsall Senior Cup.

It was one way traffic in the first half as the Scholars piled on the pressure. Jakob Borroughs troubled the Lichfield goalkeeper with a low-driven shot early on, but it travelled just wide of the left post.

The visitors also had their own chances, with intermittent bursts of pressure on the Chasetown goal, but the Scholars were able to commit bodies back to block all of the chances.

Around the hour mark, Dilano Reid was brought down outside the box by Lichfield’s Jamie Elkes. Contrary to the belief from Chasetown fans that a red card should have been handed out, nothing was given to the Lichfield number four. The resulting free kick, taken by Borroughs, sailed over the crossbar.

The Scholars kept the pressure on, but James Beeson in the Lichfield goal managed to save everything that Chasetown sent his way. Luke McGinnell came close midway through the second half by rattling the crossbar with a shot from the right hand side of the goal.

Eventually, in the 78th minute, Liam Kirton drilled a low cross into the box to find Kyle Perry who tapped the ball home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Lichfield found themselves with a few corners towards the end of the game, but they were hacked away by Chasetown, and the Scholars were able to secure themselves a spot in the semi-final away at Rushall Olympic.

Chasetown advance through to cup semi final (Ryan Robinson)

Chasetown beat local rivals Lichfield City 1-0 in the Walsall Senior Cup quarterfinal, courtesy of Kyle Perry’s first goal since his return to the club.

The first half started with a bang, when 10 minutes into the half, Dilano Reid hit a shot that fizzed narrowly wide, leaving the keeper sprawling towards the far post.

Not long after Oli Hayward gained the ball about 20 yards out and drilled the ball across the floor, only for his shot to dribble the wrong side of the near post.

Reid came close again when he forced the keeper to palm away his oncoming shot that flew towards the net like a bullet.

The second half failed to come to life until Reid was brought down on the edge of the box leaving the Chasetown fans calling for a red card, only for the referee to deem it as a yellow card offence.

Chasetown deservedly took the lead in the 78th minute, when Liam Kirton fizzed a ball across for Perry to slot home from a yard out.

The action did not stop then when, 3 minutes from time, Lichfield were reduced to ten men when Jamie Elkes was sent off for violent conduct.

Chasetown now advance to a semi final away tie versus Rushall Olympic, but will first continue their league title charge when they travel to Carlton Town this Saturday, the 2nd of April, 3pm kick off.
