9 goals in a week for in-form Scholars

Paul Mullins18 Oct 2014 - 20:56

Chasetown went goal crazy for the second time in a week, following their 4-1 midweek win, with a 5-0 scoreline over Staffordshire rivals Norton United

Norton may be into the final qualifying round of the FA Cup next Saturday but their hopes of a Wembley final came to an end at the first hurdle as the Scholars were in rampant form.

Chasetown started brightly and within the first few moments, Richard Brandon had to be at his best to fingertip over an effort from Nick Wellecomme.

Wellecomme gave a positive Chasetown side the lead in the 28th minute from a tight angle with a low shot into Brandon's right-hand bottom corner.

Almost immediately after the goal, Norton was reduced to ten men when Kyle Diskin clashed with Lee Butler and received his marching orders from Referee Mr Middleton.

Wellecomme was a whisker wide of the post with a volley as the home side tried to make the one man advantage count before the interval.

At the start of the second half it seems only a matter of time before Chasetown extended their lead. In the 51st minute, that goal almost came. Simon Brown unselfishly slid the ball beyond Brandon into Wellecomme’s path but at full stretch the Chase number 9 could not get enough purchase on the ball to divert it over the line.

Just beyond the hour, the home side finally got the daylight their performance deserved. Midweek’s man of the match Richard Davies slid a delightful ball through to Wellecomme and he poked the ball through the legs of Brandon.

The ten men were dead and buried when Chasetown made it 3-0 with 17 minutes to go. Substitute Jack Lees’ pass eluded Wellecomme but fell to Butler, who brought the ball under control and smashed a ferocious shot beyond Brandon at the near post.

One of the largest cheers of the afternoon was reserved for the scorer of the fourth goal. Six minutes from time, Lees got off the mark with his first Chasetown goal with a confident strike from twelve yards out after Theo Robinson had set him up.

The Scholars went nap in stoppage time when Jermaine Johnson got forward and picked out Davies who prodded the ball home for his first goal since returning to the club.
