In fact, aside from the goal apiece, both sides had great chances from close range that were fired over the crossbar when either side might have expected to score.
Rugby had the better of the opening and the pace of the Valley front two had Chasetown on the back foot for large periods. John Bateman had to save well from Seb Lake-Gaskin and then Chris Slater cleared well to deny David Kolodynski.
Kolodynski then blazed over the bar from close range when it looked easier to hit the target as the home side began to dominate.
Gradually, Chasetown got some sort of control on the ball and once they got it down and passed it became more of a threat. Lee Butler saw a free kick headed off the line by Craig Kelly as the visitors started to threaten.
Eight minutes before the break, Lee Parsons shot from range to force goalkeeper Nick Bennion to push round his left-hand post for a corner. From which, Nathan Waite flicked the ball into the danger area and Jermaine Johnson reacted quickest to fire the ball into the roof of the Rugby net – his first goal in Chasetown colours.
It did not take Valley long into the second half to draw level. Sam Youngs found Jamie Towers at the far post with an in-swinging cross and the right winger made no mistake with his first time finish from close range.
Full back Alex Austin was lucky to only escape with a yellow card as Dexter Ravenhill outpaced him down Chasetown’s inside left channel as the Scholars responded brightly to conceding the goal.
Butler twice saw free-kicks punched clear by Bennion as Chasetown looked increasingly likely to score the winner.
However, as Kolodynski had done before half-time, Scholars substitute Jack Lees had a golden chance to seal the tie and avoid the replay. Ravenhill got the cross in from the left and Lees timed his run to perfection, got a good connection on the ball but could not quite keep the ball down from ten yards out and the ball flashed over the crossbar with Bennion beaten.
It was, however, the fairest result and both sides go into the draw on Monday to see who they might draw on September 27th.
