A spirited Chasetown display – the first game with new manager Marcus Law in charge – saw the Scholars bow out of the Staffordshire Senior Cup on penalties.
Nicky Turton netted twice on his first start for the club as manager Marcus Law finally got his career under way as Chasetown manager after three postponements.
After 14 minutes Turton seized on a pass from midfield and fired low across Leek goal keeper Ben Chapman – Turton’s first goal for the club.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 50th minute with a fierce effort from long range from loan striker Paul Sullivan – his first goal since his return from Hednesford Town,
Within a minute though, Leek Town reduced the deficit through Tim Grice and levelled in the 71st minute when substitute Dan Shelley netted after Chase keeper John Bateman had first made a brilliant double save to deny Grice.
Nine minutes from full time an excellent move involving Richard Davies and Sullivan teed up Turton who confidently fired home from twelve yards.
In the fourth minute of stoppage time the hosts forced the game into extra time when right back Rhys Thompson scored from inside the visiting penalty area.
Much of extra time was cat and mouse to avoid losing the game, with the hosts perhaps shading what little goalmouth action there was.
Chasetown went first in the penalty shootout, with Simon Brown them a dream start. Paul Sullivan put his kick over the bar but when Bateman saved a leek kick, Jermaine Johnson levelled at 2-2. Richard Davies saw his kick saved by Chapman’s legs and when Leek converted, Danny Edwards put his kick wide and the hosts went through with one penalty to spare.
