Chasetown Young Scholars!

Paul Mullins10 Jul 2013 - 10:58

A young Chasetown side progressed to the quarter finals of the Walsall Senior Cup with a straightforward cup victory.

With several first team regulars rested ahead of the FA Carlsberg Trophy visit to Marine on Saturday, some of the Scholars young guns had a chance to shine and they produced a workmanlike performance with an early goal in each half enough to see them home safely.

It took Chasetown just six minutes to hit the front when first team debutant Lee Wright found space in front of goal and poked the ball beyond Wanderers keeper Andrew Aston and the Scholars were on their way.

The West Midlands Regional League side tried hard to resist with attacking midfielder Nathan Dodd looking strong, but Jack Farmer countered his efforts down the left every time.

Theo Robinson headed wide at the far post from a Danny Smith cross on 24 minutes, Smith then going close three minutes later after latching onto a clearance from Ryan Price but Aston was able to gather. David Bridgwater’s free kick from the left then flew narrowly over the bar as the Scholars continued to push hard, a further effort clattering off the underside of the bar on 35 minutes.

Smith was leading the Scholars attack in style but could not find the target, his 40th minute strike bouncing back off the far post and the Wanderers defence were able to clear.

Two minutes after the break Chasetown’s lead was doubled when Smith rounded Aston on the edge of the area and tapped home into the empty net.

Smith would go close twice in quick succession with a brace of headers but these were cleared for a corner and a goal kick respectively before he was replaced by Karl Edwards. Bridgwater then fired straight at Aston and Theo Robinson also went close but his shot was forced out for a corner.

Warstones had their best chance of the game on 71 minutes with a dangerous-looking free kick from just outside the area, but although Dodd’s kick curled round the Chasetown wall the ball bounced off the woodwork.

Robinson then beat a brace of defenders down the right but his shot flew wide as the Scholars continued to push hard, Aston getting down low to deny Wright a second goal in the closing minutes.

Chasetown: Price, Farmer, Peel, Turner, Bridgwater, Cohen, Robinson, Westwood, Dovey, Smith (Edwards, 59 mins), Wright
