Revenge for Marine

Paul Mullins10 Jul 2013 - 10:58

Marine gained revenge for their recent league defeat by Chasetown as they ended the Scholars’ FA Carlsberg Trophy bid.

The second encounter between the two sides in as many Saturdays at the Arriva Stadium saw a fine fast-paced opening with several chances, Gary Birch heading a corner clear in the tenth minute before setting up Mark Hands at the other end for a volley which was charged down by the home defence.

Marine took the lead in the 20th minute when Andy Fowler was allowed too much space by the defence and turned to blast a right-footed shot past the diving Ryan Price.

The hard-working Price would produce a trio of fine saves as Chasetown tried to fight back with Hands and Birch leading the attack alongside Danny Smith, and in the 40th minute the equaliser came after Birch was fouled. Mark Branch took the free kick and the dead ball specialist sent his left-footed kick over the wall and into the net.

The score remained level for just two minutes however, as a through ball split the Scholars defence and Aaron Rey beat Price to the ball to restore Marine’s lead.

Two minutes after the break the Mariners were on target again when Chasetown failed to clear and the loose ball broke to Paul Lundon who smashed his shot into the roof of the net.

Manager Chris Brindley rang the changes for the Scholars soon after with a triple substitution and ten minutes later the visitors pulled one back when Smith latched onto a fine ball from Linden Dovey and fired a shot beyond keeper Ryan McMahon to make it 3-2.

Theo Robinson also went close for the Scholars following a corner but on 79 minutes the hosts made it four when Neil Harvey forced a cross from the left over the line.

Chasetown upped their tempo for one final effort but this led to gaps appearing at the back and with two minutes to go Harvey sent a ball over the defence allowing substitute Carl Gargan to add a fifth for the Mariners, and a fighting performance from the Scholars sadly went unrewarded.

Chasetown: Price, Farmer, M Branch, Slater, Stride (Perrow, 60 mins), Teesdale, Hands (Robinson, 60 mins), Reid, Birch (Dovey, 60 mins), Smith, James

Other Subs: Turner, Peel (not used)
