Chasetown almost opened the scoring when Mitch Piggon was clean through but he dragged his shot narrowly wide.
Then a brilliant cross from Josh Ruff was kept alive by Jack Langston with Jake Turner deflecting the ball out to James Dance who was a whisker over the bar with a right foot shot.
The hosts took the lead with a long ball forward to Lee Shaw who reached the ball ahead of John Bateman and diverted the ball over the keeper’s head.
On the stroke of half time Chasetown’s Ryan Wynter had a shot beyond Turner but Stefan Galinski cleared off the line.
Chasetown levelled with a spectacular strike early in the second half. Ruff’s cross was drilled back into the danger area by Langston and Piggon thumped his third goal of the cup campaign with a thunderous volley.
The Gingerbreads regained the lead with former Chasetown striker Grant Ryan in acres of space at the far post and he drilled a low shot beyond Bateman.
In the 89th minute Rooney’s corner was headed back across and Piggon stunned the home fans with his second equaliser of the night.
In the first half of extra time, Chasetown sub Seb Lake-Gaskin was denied by a brilliant Turner save.
Chances were few and far between in extra time and penalties were required.
Chasetown went first with penalties. Rooney, Piggon, Wynter, Dance, Banks scored the first five and when Pierce Kiembi netted the first of sudden death, Bateman saved from Danny Durkin and the Scholars progressed.
