Chasetown needed a penalty shoot-out to progress to the semi-final.

With the Scholars eager to get back into form following a brace of League defeats they quickly took the game to their Midland Alliance opponents and regular Cup rivals, but the first half would progress slowly despite Dean Perrow and Danny Smith finding a succession of chances, but they were unable to convert them.

Hayes lost goalkeeper Adam Jenkins after only 16 minutes with a dislocated finger and defender Ben Maddox had to replace him in goal. Chasetown fans began to sense victory, but Maddox would put in a fine performance between the sticks and the score remained goalless at the break.

The pace picked up in the second half and on 62 minutes a Mark Branch corner from the right was headed home by skipper Richard Teesdale and Chasetown were in front.

The Scholars’ lead would last just five minutes, however, as a move down the centre caught keeper Ryan Price off guard and Karl Wallis was able to slot home at his near post.

Thereafter it was Chasetown all the way for much of the half, the Hayes goal peppered with further attacks from Perrow and Smith. Dave Bridgwater and Mark Branch supplied several free kicks and corners while Mark Hands worked hard in midfield and Greg Downes – on his first Scholars start – produced several powerful shots but all would fly wide. Hayes were more than up to the task however, Maddox in particular impressing with several good saves.

In the last five minutes Teesdale headed two corners into the side netting and the bar respectively while Smith headed wide at the near post from yet another Scholars corner, and extra time beckoned.

Though both sides dug deep during the extra period the target could not be found, Perrow frustrated more than once by the woodwork while home substitute Danny Owen went very close with a low shot, and penalties would settle the result.

Perrow was fated not to score and Maddox saved his kick, but Hayes’ sixth attempt saw Price save from Luke Jones and Downes netted the last kick for the Scholars to set up a meeting with Rushall Olympic in the semi-finals.
