Rushall Olympic
Disappointingly predictable!

Disappointingly predictable!

Paul Mullins10 Jul 2013 - 11:02

Chasetown’s Walsall Senior Cup semi-final was all over by half time as Rushall Olympic cruised to a 4-0 win.

The opening five minutes saw plenty of fast-paced end to end play, Craig Bannister finding the first chance but heading over the bar, but on 15 minutes the Pics took the lead when a free kick from the halfway line found Luke Bottomer in space on the edge of the area and he turned and fired beyond Ryan Price into the corner of the net.

The visitors doubled their lead on 23 minutes when a corner from Jonathan Haynes was played back into the box and skipper Grant Beckett rose to head the ball past Price.

Jordan Archer found Chasetown’s first clear chance on 27 minutes but the young gun fired high and wide, and Rushall would make it three goals in half an hour when Bannister fired home two minutes later.

Ahmed Obeng was then close to making it four but Price challenged at the point of shooting, but five minutes before half time Obeng was brought down by Richard Teesdale in the area and Mitchell Tolley converted the resulting penalty to put the Pics 4-0 up.

Former Scholar Alex Melbourne then fired over the bar before Obeng went close again in the closing minutes to end a dominant half for the Pics with the Scholars left somewhat shell-shocked.

Archer again tried to break through as the second half began but he was halted by Decio Gomes, but the Scholars looked a little more positive with Archer and Jack Farmer attacking down the right while young Chad Degville showed flashes of brilliance when he replaced Karl Edwards.

Dean Perrow also showed better pace and went close on a couple of occasions but Pics keeper Chris Gemmell was equal to him each time before another attack from Perrow saw him head an Archer cross wide.

Rushall could afford to take their foot off the gas a little in the closing stages but they certainly weren’t allowing Chasetown any chances to grab a consolation goal, an effort at the near post by Perrow on 78 minutes crowded out for a corner as the visitors closed the game down in the final minutes en route to a meeting with Brocton in next month’s Final.

Chasetown: Price, Farmer (Smith, 85 mins), M Branch, Turner (Lycett, 56 mins), Downes, Teesdale, Wright, Hands, Archer, Perrow, Edwards (Degville, HT)

Other Subs: Pitt, Quinn (not used)
